General characteristics

The SCI "Val di Mello - Piano di Preda Rossa" coincides with "Val di Mello" (2,578 ha, 87.5% of the total), the Forest of Lombardy Val Masino, in the western branch of the valley. The Forest Val Masino, with a total area of 2,945 ha, is in fact divided into two distinct areas, which includes, in addition to the aforementioned, also "Bagni di Masino" (367 ha, 12.5% of the total) located in the valley to the east. Both areas are part of the municipality of Val Masino (SO).  

Habitat types and species of major interest

It is possible to identify different types of vegetation: forest of tall trees (deciduous and coniferous) in the basal part of the valley and on the upper side of the valleys (from 1,200 to 2,000 m above sea level); forest for timber, especially in the valley and in the most accessible areas (forests of mixed deciduous and coniferous); mountain pastures (around 1,800 m asl) to the upper limit of vegetation (2,400 m , rock vegetation and debris) to the area lower than 1,150 m.

In terms of morphology, the areas exhibit the qualities of the classic alpine glacial cirques, rugged granite peaks, glacial deposits and accumulations of debris slope, aim of mountaineering enthusiasts. The considerable wealth of the environment is accompanied by the abundance of species belonging to the alpine fauna, among which the presence of chamois, deer, ibex, marmots and eagles.
