General characteristics

The SCI Valvestino covers more than half of the total Forest Gardesana, which is the largest area of the Lombardy Regional Forest (about 11,058 ha). It is located west of the northern portion of Lake Garda in the eastern part of the Alps of Lombardy. A large portion of its area falls within the Community Montana Alto Garda Bresciano Park. The forest is located almost entirely above the 600 m with minimum at 400 m and maximum altitude at 1976 m (Mt Caplone). In addition to the natural beauty, the Regional Forest offers many historical and cultural signs of the past linked to the old mountain activities (sawmill, barns of Rest) and military events that marked over the centuries the area between Italy and the 'Habsburg Empire (trenches, memorials, customs, military barracks).

Habitat types and species of major interest

The landscape is unique, on one side striking views of the lake and on the other side views of the wooded or rocky slopes of the valleys. The deciduous, coniferous and mixed forests are characterized by the presence of black pine, ash, oak, beech, pine, spruce and mountain pine. On the cliffs there are valuable endemic species. The mountain fauna is enriched by the presence of ibex, chamois, and numerous roe and deer. Eagle and the black grouse nest, as well as a varied avifauna of high natural value.

Use

In 2002, a Visitor Center it was installed in Tignale, a center for information, education and promotion of the territory, which offers hikers the opportunity to discover a wide and diverse territory and, thanks to a dense network of hiking trails, a majestic nature which is sometimes still wild.
