Project idea

The first Italian project which develops innovative approaches of environmental governance to preserve agro-forest ecosystems

What it is. The project LIFE+ Making Good Natura - Making public Good provision the core business of Natura 2000 - project number LIFE11 ENV/IT/000168 - is a LIFE+ project with a length of four years (2012 -2016), inserted into the LIFE+ Environment Policy & Governance component, co-financing innovative or pilot projects that contribute to the implementation of European environmental policy.

What it does. The project LIFE+ Making Good Natura develops innovative approaches of environmental governance to preserve agro-forest-ecosystems and elaborates instruments for qualitative and quantitative valuation of the ecosystem services in the study sites of the Natura 2000 network.

How. The project aims to create the basis for an effective management of the habitats and species included in the Habitat and Birds Directive to provide management and self-financing instruments for financing conservation measures to the administrative authorities of the Natura 2000 sites.

The instruments of self-financing well be Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) and specific mechanisms like: negotiable permits, tax for usage of services, Verified Emission Reduction for carbon sequestration, commercial activities, donations, etc.

The actions in brief:

1. Elaboration of a demonstrative model for the valuation of ecosystem services in the study sites.
2. Elaboration of a demonstrative model for the governance of the study sites based on self-financing.
3. Realization of a Software WebGIS for the valuation and quantification of ecosystem services
4. Realization of guidelines for the application of the governance model.
5. Realization of public events to divulge the project activities.

All actions of the project

The study sites. The project involves 21 study sites of the Natura 2000 network and covers a total area of 90.239 ha.

The high environmental and socio-economic diversity in Italy is represented by the project LIFE+ Making Good Natura, on the one site by including seven regions (Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Marche, Lombardy e Sicily), on the other site by covering the three biogeographic regions which are present in Italy: Alpine, Mediterranean and Continental.

Who realises the project. Project leader is the Consorzio Universitario per la Ricerca Socioeconomica e per l'Ambiente (CURSA).
