Management effectiveness

In recent decades, ecosystems are increasingly threatened: from ecological fragmentation to land consumption, from environmental pollution to global warming.

These threats that daily influence the environment are not fought with adequate measures for the conservation, preservation and protection. Recent studies show that Italy invests little in its 25 National Parks (approx. € 50 million/year) and even less is destined for the Natura 2000 network. The financial report on the progress of the 6 regions (Valle d'Aosta, Sicily, Veneto, Marche, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio), which have established the 213 Measurement "Natura 2000 payments" related to agricultural land, shows zero expenses, underlining the difficulties to adequately finance the owners of the sites.

The recent developments emphasize that the relevant public bodies are not able to manage these and other significant threats mainly due to the inadequacy of most of the technical and financial tools at their disposal.

The project LIFE + Making Good Natura aims to overcome these problems by providing new tools of governance to ensure an effective management of the Natura 2000 sites.
